Careers Education, Information and Guidance
What are our strategic objectives?
At Buile Hill Academy we strive to support every student to achieve their aspirations and to believe in themselves. Through our high quality programme of CEIAG (careers education, information, advice and guidance), our students are supported to make realistic and informed decisions about their future career pathways, to have high aspirations and to support them with achieving personal success and future economic well being.
Our Careers programme is designed to provide our students with the gift of choice. The choice provided by having the best possible range of qualifications to access employment, training or further education.
Our careers programme supports the achievement of the eight Gatsby Benchmarks as detailed in the Department for Education’s Statutory Guidance, January 2018.To demonstrate our commitment to delivering high quality careers education, Buile Hill Academy is working with Careerwave to achieve the nationally recognised Quality in Careers Standard.
We have the following strategic objectives for our careers programme:
Strategic Objective 1
To broaden the aspirations of all students regardless of need or ability.
Strategic Objective 2
To Increase the amount and variety of opportunities for students to have meaningful experiences of post-school Further Education, Higher Education, training and employment providers.
Strategic Objective 3
To provide opportunities for all students to see the relationship between what they learn within the formal curriculum and wider world of work – Linking the curriculum learning to careers.
Strategic Objective 4
To actively encourage stakeholder engagement in an appropriate and effective careers programme.
What is our core careers offer?
All students at Buile Hill Academy are entitled to receive a programme of careers education, work- related learning, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG and WRL). This will be delivered at appropriate times to support decision making.
Our core careers offer for all students includes:
- Access to independent careers guidance by a qualified professional – at least one interview by the age of 16
- Advice and support tailored to the needs of each student
- Activities which seek to challenge stereotypical thinking and raise aspirations
- Subject lessons linked to careers
- Employer encounters – at least one each year including STEM employers
- Experience of the workplace – at least one experience by the age of 16
- Opportunities to speak with/visit a range of further education, higher education and training providers
- Access to careers information via Tutor Time, bulletins, careers library and online resources
- Life Skills lessons
- Promotion of local labour market information
- Parental support and guidance
Our Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) Programme will:
- provide high quality independent and impartial careers advice to all students which raises aspirations and motivates them to consider a broad range of careers to fulfil their potential. By the age of 16 all students will have received at least one independent guidance interview.
- empower young people to plan and manage their own futures
- give careers and labour market information and advice that is up to date
- respond to the needs of each learner, supporting inclusion, challenging stereotyping and promoting equality of opportunity
- provide opportunities to work in partnership with employers to inspire students through real-life contact with the world of work. All students will participate in at least one meaningful employer encounter each year and have at least one experience of a workplace by the age of 16.
- provide opportunities to access a range of further and higher education institutions, training providers and others to ensure students are informed of all available pathways including
technical education qualifications and apprenticeships - develop enterprise and employability skills including skills for self-employment
- support students at key transition points
What do we offer for students?
We support students in making well-informed decisions about significant study or career choices, by providing access to differentiated, impartial and independent information and guidance about the range of options (including academic, vocational, apprenticeships) that are most likely to help them to achieve their ambitions. This independent advice is provided through a variety of organisations with exceptional experience and expertise both locally and nationally. By helping students with decisions at crucial stages, informing them of all their options and introducing them to employers, we aim to prepare them for the world of work regardless of the pathway they choose.
All students receive careers education through our Life@NSA curriculum as well as our wider co-curriculum offer of tutor time activities. All students receive free and independent careers guidance throughout their time at school with individual careers interviews conducted with all students in Year 9 and Year 11. As well as this students have access to independent careers advice whenever required through our weekly Careers Corner.
We have a careers programme designed to support our students at all stages of their learning journey. This programme provides our students with the knowledge, inspiration and ability to take ownership of their own career action plans and enables them to succeed in their chosen career paths. Students will have completed the following by the end of each year:
Year 7
Students reflected on their own skills, personal qualities and ambitions. They are aware of gender stereotyping and other types of stereotyping and self-limiting misperceptions. They are aware of the importance of avoiding inappropriate contributions to social media. They are aware of the contents of a CV and have completed a first draft version.
Year 8
Students have reflected on their own skills, personal qualities and ambitions. Students will be aware of the differences between personal qualities and skills and the importance of both to potential future employers. Students can explain the term transferable skills and describe some examples. Students can discuss how “career successful” people have developed their own skills through their lifetime to date.
Year 9
Students have reflected on their own skills, personal qualities and ambitions. Students will be aware of the differences between personal qualities and skills and the importance of both to potential future employers. Students can explain the term transferable skills and describe some examples. Students can discuss how to acquire skills/demonstrate personal qualities. They can evaluate their own skill base and identify skills they may need to practise/develop/acquire in order to pursue their career ambitions.
Year 10 / 11
Students will be able to make informed decisions about Post-16 Options. They will develop their decision-making skills and set targets to help them achieve their post-16 goals. They will understand the application processes for college, work and apprenticeships.
What do we offer for parents?
We aim to provide the best possible information and guidance for parents and carers to ensure that they are able to support our students to make informed decisions. Independent careers advisors are present at all Parents Evening as well as the Year 9 Guided Pathways Evening. The NET Post-16 Parents Guide has also been created in order to provide useful information and guidance.
What do we offer for our partners and providers?
We work extensively with partners from employment, industry, further education and higher education to ensure students have access to opportunities to develop their knowledge of the local and national labour market. We are committed to ensuring all providers have full access to our students.
